Biological Identification
Egg Identification
Different mosquito genera lay eggs in distinctive patterns and environments. Learn how to recognize and identify egg formations to target breeding sites.
Culex Genus
Floating Rafts
Eggs are glued together side-by-side to form a boat-like raft that floats on the water surface. Each raft contains 100 to 300 eggs and is about 1/4 inch long. Laid on standing, stagnant water pools.
Aedes Genus
Individual Soil Eggs
Eggs are laid individually on damp soil or container walls just above the waterline. They are black, spindle-shaped, and can survive drying out for months, hatching only when water levels rise.
Anopheles Genus
Individual Floating Eggs
Eggs are laid singly on the water surface. They possess unique, translucent lateral floats on both sides, which keep them buoyant. They require clean, fresh water and cannot survive drying.
