Environmental Management
Breeding Sites
Understand where mosquitoes lay eggs, learn to identify hidden water reservoirs in residential and rural environments, and apply remediation steps.
Artificial Container Sites
Container Breeders (*Aedes*): Aedes mosquitoes prefer clean water in artificial containers. Key breeding sites include:
- Flower pot plates, saucers, and watering cans.
- Discarded vehicle tires (hold warmth and water).
- Blocked roof gutters and pool covers.
- Pet bowls, bird baths, and plastic buckets.
Remediation: Tip and scrub containers weekly to dislodge eggs. Add mesh screens to rain barrels or treat them with Bti larvicides.
Natural & Stagnant Pools
Organic Breeders (*Culex* & *Anopheles*): These species prefer nutrient-rich, stagnant, or slow-moving water:
- Roadside ditches and storm drains.
- Agricultural irrigation channels and rice fields.
- Marshes, bogs, and stream edges with heavy vegetation.
- Animal footprints and mud pits holding water.
Remediation: Clear weeds to allow water flow. Introduce predatory mosquitofish (Gambusia) or apply larvicide oils to disrupt breathing spiracles.
